Understanding Job Titles, Seniority Levels, and What They Really Mean

5 min read

Job titles are one of the least standardized parts of the hiring process. A "Senior Analyst" at one company may carry more responsibility than a "Manager" at another, which makes it risky to judge a role by title alone.

Instead, focus on three concrete indicators: who the role reports to, whether it involves managing people or budgets, and what kind of decisions the person in the role is expected to make independently.

When comparing two offers or postings with different titles, try translating both into a simple description of scope: what problems this person solves, how much oversight they have, and what success looks like after six or twelve months. This makes it much easier to compare opportunities on a level playing field.

It is also worth remembering that a title alone will not determine your growth. The scope of responsibility, the quality of mentorship, and the visibility of your work often matter more for long-term career development than the specific label on your business card.
