Why Quality Beats Quantity When Applying for Jobs

5 min read

It's tempting to believe that the more applications you send, the faster you will land a job. In reality, unfocused, high-volume applying often produces the opposite effect: low response rates, generic cover letters, and a CV that never quite matches what the employer is looking for.

A more effective approach is to treat each application as a small project. Research the company, understand the role's real requirements, and adjust your CV and cover letter to reflect the specific language and priorities in the posting. This does not mean rewriting everything from scratch each time, but it does mean making deliberate, relevant edits.

Consider narrowing your list to roles where you meet most of the core requirements and can clearly explain why you are a strong fit. This focus tends to produce meaningfully higher interview rates than a scattershot approach, even with fewer total applications sent.

If you are unsure where to focus, start by listing the five to ten companies or types of roles you would be genuinely excited about, and build your search outward from there rather than reacting to whatever appears in a general search.
