How to Plan Your Next Career Move With Intention

6 min read

Career development often happens by accident — an opportunity appears and you take it — but a more intentional approach tends to produce better long-term outcomes.

Start by defining what growth actually means to you: is it increased responsibility, deeper expertise, broader exposure, better compensation, or improved work-life balance? These goals sometimes point in different directions, so clarity matters.

Once your priorities are clear, evaluate opportunities — whether an internal promotion, a lateral move, or an external offer — against those specific priorities rather than general prestige or a higher title alone.

Revisit this plan roughly once or twice a year. Career goals evolve, and a plan built two years ago may no longer reflect what matters most to you today.
